SAN JOSE — South Korean AI startup Upstage has unveiled its latest large language model (LLM), Solar Pro, now available on AWS platforms including Amazon Bedrock Marketplace, Amazon SageMaker JumpStart, and AWS Marketplace. Designed for industries such as healthcare, finance, and legal services, Solar Pro delivers exceptional cost efficiency and performance, with benchmark scores improved by up to 50% over its predecessor.
At 22 billion parameters, Solar Pro outperforms larger models through Upstage’s proprietary Depth-Up Scaling (DUS) method, a pre-training technique that maintains top-tier performance while reducing computational requirements. This compact design allows Solar Pro to run efficiently on single-GPU deployments while achieving results comparable to much larger models, significantly cutting infrastructure costs for businesses.
Powered by AWS Infrastructure
Solar Pro’s success was driven by Amazon SageMaker, which accelerated the model’s training using advanced data pre-processing and continued pre-training techniques. The model also benefited from the 1 Trillion Token Club, an alliance spearheaded by Upstage, leveraging diverse and copyright-free English and Korean datasets. This ensured Solar Pro’s ability to interpret cultural nuances with heightened accuracy, while reducing common AI errors such as hallucinations.
Available on Amazon Bedrock Marketplace, customers can seamlessly deploy Solar Pro, select infrastructure tailored to their scaling needs, and integrate it with Amazon’s APIs. This enables secure, efficient workflows with tools like Guardrails, Agents, and built-in privacy features.
Industry Applications and Impact
Solar Pro excels at extracting and interpreting structured data from complex documents like invoices, legal contracts, and regulatory filings. Its capabilities streamline workflows by automating repetitive tasks and organizing critical information for direct input into enterprise systems.
“Solar Pro addresses major challenges for industries where document processing, accuracy, and efficiency are critical,” said Sung Kim, CEO of Upstage. “AWS’s infrastructure allowed us to train Solar Pro on extensive datasets efficiently, enabling us to deliver advanced AI that supports complex workflows, whether analyzing financial reports, interpreting medical records, or processing legal documentation.”
Kee Ho Ham, Managing Director at AWS Korea, highlighted the collaboration: “AWS is committed to supporting innovators like Upstage in delivering accessible and powerful AI solutions. Through our Partner Network, startups like Upstage can scale their technologies globally, helping businesses across industries accelerate generative AI adoption with confidence.”
Proven Adoption Across Industries
Solar Pro’s capabilities are already transforming businesses worldwide. South Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) partnered with Upstage to create an LLM-powered chatbot trained on internal manuals. The chatbot automates responses to complex inquiries about cosmetic regulations, a process that previously required significant human intervention.
“The rise of generative AI has opened opportunities for the public sector to operate more efficiently,” said Chanyoung Park, Deputy Director at MFDS. “Our collaboration with Upstage demonstrates how AI can streamline operations and enhance the accessibility of public information.”
Leading communication API provider Sendbird has also integrated Upstage’s Solar LLM into its no-code generative AI chatbot platform. This collaboration empowers businesses to deploy custom AI-powered chatbots on websites and mobile applications, delivering human-like customer support.
“Combining Sendbird AI Chatbot with Solar will unlock the full potential of generative AI,” said John Kim, CEO of Sendbird. “This partnership is a game-changer for businesses seeking to innovate customer experiences and enterprise support.”
With Solar Pro now available on AWS, businesses worldwide can adopt scalable, cost-effective AI solutions to streamline operations and boost productivity.
