DELFT — TU Delft and JetBrains have united their knowledge and expertise in AI and software development to establish the AI for Software Engineering Lab (AI4SE), aimed at engineering superior software using artificial intelligence. The lab, a five-year collaboration, will focus on leveraging AI methodologies in software engineering, including development, testing, and programming education. It will be helmed by a joint team of researchers from both institutions, featuring notable figures like Prof. Dr. Arie van Deursen and Dr. Maliheh Izadi from TU Delft, alongside Dr. Vladimir Kovalenko and Dr. Pouria Derakhshanfar from JetBrains, according to a press release published on EuropaWire .

JetBrains, a renowned provider of software engineering tools worldwide, sees this collaboration as a convergence of innovative technology and academic prowess. Andrey Ivanov, SVP of Investments, Research, and Education at JetBrains, expressed the company’s commitment to combining their software engineering tool expertise with TU Delft’s AI proficiency for global benefit.

Dr. Vladimir Kovalenko, Head of the ICTL Research Lab at JetBrains, emphasized the significance of AI4SE in the realm of research and beyond, affirming JetBrains Research’s enthusiasm for the partnership with TU Delft.

Prof. dr. Arie van Deursen, Head of the Software Technology department at TU Delft, lauded the partnership as a groundbreaking endeavor that harnesses the latest AI developments to revolutionize software development.

AI4SE marks TU Delft’s 10th ICAI lab (Innovation Center for Artificial Intelligence), underlining the university’s commitment to real-world AI applications. The lab will host five open PhD positions, each focusing on specific tracks such as Code Generation for Validation and Intelligent Teaching Assistant in Programming Education.
