MLADÁ BOLESLAV — Škoda Auto has unveiled a groundbreaking integration, announcing the incorporation of the AI-based chatbot ChatGPT into its Laura voice assistant. This transformative step aims to elevate the in-vehicle experience for numerous customers, offering convenience and ease in daily life. Models based on the MEB GP and MQB EVO platforms will reap the benefits of this innovative feature, granting access to a vast AI database and enabling content consumption while on the road. Powered by Cerence Chat Pro from technology partner Cerence Inc., the automotive-grade ChatGPT integration ensures the protection of personal data and vehicle information at all times, according to a press release published on EuropaWire.
“Enriching Škoda voice assistance with artificial intelligence makes our cars an even better everyday companion,” remarked Klaus Zellmer, CEO of Škoda Auto. “Drivers and passengers will have easy, verbal access to worlds of knowledge while on the road. Integrating ChatGPT into our voice assistant Laura is just the latest way that Škoda adapts advanced technology to improve the driving experience. Everything remains hands-free for the driver, and data security remains a priority. I am confident that customers will appreciate this modern new feature.”
The introduction of the new chatbot coincides with the launch of the latest generation of infotainment systems, scheduled for mid-2024. Available in selected models such as the Škoda Enyaq, Superb, Kodiaq, and Octavia, based on the MEB GP and MQB EVO platforms, the integration of ChatGPT into the Laura voice assistant unlocks a myriad of functionalities beyond traditional voice commands. Users can control infotainment, navigation, air conditioning, and seek answers to general knowledge questions. The AI capabilities promise continuous growth, providing enhanced information and intuitive interactions during car journeys while ensuring hands-free operation for safety.
With data protection as a top priority, the activation of the voice assistant remains seamless for drivers. Commands are initiated with “Okay, Laura” or through the steering wheel button. In instances where the Škoda system cannot respond, queries are anonymously forwarded to the AI. Crucially, ChatGPT operates without accessing vehicle data or personal information, and all interactions are promptly deleted post-processing, ensuring stringent data protection standards. This innovative feature will extend to further models within the Volkswagen Group brands, promising a safer, smarter driving experience for all.
