SAN FRANCISCO — To enhance user experience, OpenAI is launching a new feature called custom instructions, allowing users to tailor ChatGPT responses to better fit their needs. Starting today, this feature will be available in beta for Plus plan subscribers and will expand to all users in the coming weeks.
The custom instructions feature enables users to set their preferences or specific requirements, which ChatGPT will then consider in all future interactions. This update aims to reduce the repetitive process of reintroducing context or preferences at the beginning of each conversation.
Based on feedback from users across 22 countries, OpenAI recognizes the importance of steerability in making AI models more effective and responsive to individual needs. Custom instructions will ensure that users’ specified preferences are remembered and applied in every response generated by ChatGPT.
For instance, a teacher creating lesson plans for 3rd grade science can set this preference once, and ChatGPT will retain this context for all relevant queries. Similarly, a developer who prefers code in a language other than Python can indicate this preference, and it will be remembered for future coding assistance. Even tasks like grocery shopping for a large family become more streamlined, as the model will account for the specified number of servings.
This update underscores OpenAI’s commitment to improving the usability and personalization of its AI models, making them more adaptable and useful for a diverse range of applications.
