SAN FRANCISCO — The American Journalism Project (AJP) has announced a new partnership with OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance local journalism. OpenAI is committing $5 million to support AJP’s initiatives and an additional $5 million in OpenAI API credits to help local news organizations integrate AI technologies.
This partnership aims to develop AI tools that can benefit local news outlets by improving data analysis, personalizing user experiences, and creating new information delivery formats. It also seeks to address challenges related to misinformation, bias, privacy, and copyright.
Sarabeth Berman, CEO of AJP, emphasized the importance of involving local news organizations in shaping AI’s impact, ensuring it enhances rather than threatens journalism. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, highlighted the collaboration’s goal to use AI as a tool to strengthen local journalism and democracy.
Key initiatives include creating a technology and AI studio to support local news organizations, providing pilot investments to explore AI applications, and offering OpenAI API credits. AJP’s efforts are focused on rebuilding local news ecosystems and combating misinformation.
The American Journalism Project is a venture philanthropy organization dedicated to addressing the local news crisis by supporting nonprofit news organizations. OpenAI, founded in 2015, aims to ensure that AI benefits all of humanity.
