UTRECHT — HealthSage AI has unveiled its open Health AI platform, accompanied by three clinical applications designed to enhance physician workflows and improve healthcare efficiency. This breakthrough release, which is powered by a newly optimized version of their medical Large Language Model (LLM), comes just nine months after securing a €3 million seed investment. In collaboration with Amsterdam UMC Heart Center, HealthSage AI has refined its model and identified key applications to address challenges faced by healthcare providers, showcasing the power of generative AI in streamlining healthcare practices.
Key Features of HealthSage AI’s New Platform
HealthSage AI’s platform is built around an advanced version of its Large Language Model, which spans multiple medical specialties and supports a variety of data standards, including FHIR, ICD-10, and SNOMED-CT. The first three clinical applications available through the platform are designed to optimize workflows for healthcare professionals:
- Visit Preparation Application: This tool automatically extracts relevant information from referral letters and populates the data into the electronic health record (EHR) as structured data. This reduces the administrative burden for physicians and ensures a more comprehensive and complete patient record.
- Medical Coding Application: This application analyzes clinical notes and discharge letters to automatically select accurate codes for diagnoses and procedures, improving billing accuracy and reducing human error.
- Clinical Data Transformer: This application converts free-text notes into medical data standards, enabling better data exchange, supporting clinical research, and enhancing value-based healthcare initiatives.
“We’re thrilled to reach this pivotal moment in HealthSage AI’s journey. The launch of our open platform, new model, and first commercial applications marks an exciting step forward. Our ongoing partnership with Amsterdam UMC Heart Center has been crucial to this progress, and we’re excited to bring these innovative solutions to more hospitals in the near future,” said Marcel Alberti, co-founder of HealthSage AI.
These applications are now commercially available in the Netherlands and support both Dutch and English. HealthSage AI’s platform integrates seamlessly into a hospital’s secure IT infrastructure or existing cloud accounts, allowing it to run AI models from both HealthSage AI and other vendors. The platform offers flexibility with two model sizes, allowing healthcare providers to choose based on their specific needs while reducing their environmental footprint.
Partnership with Amsterdam UMC Heart Center
A significant aspect of HealthSage AI’s development process has been its collaboration with Amsterdam UMC Heart Center. This partnership is part of a multi-year research and development program aimed at enhancing the Large Language Model’s capabilities. Together, the teams are working to train, evaluate, and refine the model, identifying and integrating the most impactful applications into physician workflows.
“Working with HealthSage AI, we are advancing cutting-edge AI models in a responsible and impactful way. I believe that healthcare needs innovative, domain-specific models developed within Europe, with academic partners and forward-thinking startups like HealthSage AI. I am confident that generative AI can dramatically improve healthcare, particularly by alleviating the administrative load on our clinical staff, allowing them to focus more on patient care,” said Folkert Asselbergs, Cardiologist and Chairman of Amsterdam UMC Heart Center.
The Vision Behind HealthSage AI
HealthSage AI was founded with the mission to address a significant challenge in healthcare: the overwhelming administrative burden placed on clinicians. This challenge, combined with the vast amounts of unstructured data contained in clinical notes, referral letters, and other documents, often hinders clinical decision-making and patient care. HealthSage AI’s platform uses AI to automate administrative tasks, enhance decision-making, and improve patient experiences.
By unlocking the power of AI, HealthSage AI is working to create a connected healthcare system where clinical best practices and the latest AI models and applications are easily accessible to all healthcare providers. Following its €3 million seed investment in April 2024, HealthSage AI has made impressive strides, with this launch marking a critical milestone on its path to transforming healthcare through AI.
