MENLO PARK — Facebook recently hosted the 2019 Fellowship Summit at its Menlo Park headquarters, bringing together a diverse group of talented researchers from around the world. This annual event, part of Facebook’s commitment to fostering innovation, allowed Fellows to share their groundbreaking work in fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), natural language processing (NLP), computer vision, and human-computer interaction. The summit provided a platform for these young researchers to connect with Facebook’s broader research community, gaining insights into the company’s cutting-edge projects and collaborative culture.
Sharon Ayalde, Research Program Manager for the Fellowship program, led the summit, emphasizing the program’s growth and increasing diversity. This year’s cohort includes researchers working on AI-driven solutions to pressing global challenges, from improving healthcare in remote areas to combating misinformation in political campaigns.
Fellows like Mikel Artetxe, Claudia Flores-Saviaga, Yaecob Girmay Gezahegn, Vanessa Oguamanam, and Chao-Yuan Wu presented their research, showcasing innovative approaches to machine translation, crowdsourcing to fight disinformation, automated medical diagnostics, culturally relevant health tech, and video understanding. Their work reflects a broad range of applications, all aimed at making a positive social impact.
The summit not only highlighted these emerging leaders’ contributions but also underscored Facebook’s role in supporting the next generation of researchers. By offering resources, mentorship, and a collaborative environment, Facebook aims to advance the field of technology and address some of the world’s most critical challenges.
