EXETER — Elizabeth Chandler, a final year undergraduate at the University of Exeter, is making waves both in academia and industry with her pioneering work in ethical artificial intelligence (AI). Chandler, who recently clinched the Women in Tech Award and Innovate UK’s Young Innovators Award for her AI start-up, The Good Robot Company, has been invited to present a research paper on ethical AI at the World Congress of Undergraduate Research 2023, according to a press release published on EuropaWire .

Chandler’s research paper introduces a novel method called “counter-factual analysis” embedded in a bias toolkit, aimed at enhancing the ethicality of AI systems. Her work has garnered attention from industry leaders, sparking collaborations to further progress in ethical AI development.

Driven by her conviction that AI can facilitate equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), Chandler advocates for a holistic approach to AI development. She highlights the potential pitfalls of using AI tests in recruitment, emphasizing the unintended biases they may perpetuate. Through her business endeavors and academic pursuits, Chandler aims to reshape the AI landscape, ensuring inclusivity and fairness in its applications.

Chandler’s journey is marked by resilience and determination. Overcoming personal challenges, including an autism diagnosis, Chandler has emerged as a trailblazer in the field of AI. Drawing inspiration from figures like Temple Grandin, Chandler embodies the spirit of perseverance and innovation, bridging the gap between academia and industry to create a more equitable future.

As Chandler prepares to graduate, her future looks promising, with job offers on the horizon and plans to pursue further academic endeavors. With her sights set on both industry impact and scholarly contributions, Chandler is poised to continue her transformative work in ethical AI development.

For Chandler, the journey is not just about personal success but about paving the way for a more inclusive and ethical technological landscape—one where AI serves as a force for positive change.
