AMSTERDAM — The European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) has announced the acceptance of 161 new Fellows and Scholars into its network for 2024. This milestone further enriches the network with exceptional talent and expertise, aiming to solidify Europe’s position as a global leader in artificial intelligence and machine learning. With this new cohort, the ELLIS network now comprises 561 members from 23 countries.
Building the Future of AI in Europe
ELLIS was established to promote scientific excellence in AI research and to ensure Europe remains at the forefront of this transformative field. Recognizing the vital role of outstanding individuals in driving progress, the network continues to grow through the contributions of its Fellows and Scholars. These individuals were selected from over 200 applicants based on their proven track records of scientific excellence.
“ELLIS Fellows and Scholars are the backbone of our network, shaping its growth through their contributions. This new group of outstanding researchers will help keep ELLIS at the cutting edge of AI and machine learning innovation,” said Nicolò Cesa-Bianchi, Chair of the Fellows and Fellows Selection Committees.
Expanding Collaboration Across Borders
The newly accepted Fellows and Scholars represent more than 18 countries across Europe, with the highest numbers based in the UK, Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. Over half of the 43 ELLIS Sites have nominees among the new members, reflecting the network’s commitment to fostering cross-border collaboration.
In addition to site nominations, ELLIS Program Directors nominated several outstanding researchers as Program Fellows, representing 12 high-impact AI research areas. ELLIS Programs focus on critical challenges in modern AI, providing opportunities to advance innovation through targeted, collaborative efforts.
Roles of Fellows and Scholars
ELLIS Fellows and Scholars are top-tier researchers in machine learning, recognized for their significant contributions to the field. Fellows act as ambassadors for ELLIS, offering strategic guidance to advance the network and its scientific goals. Scholars, often early-career researchers such as assistant professors, are identified as rising stars on the path to becoming Fellows.
Both roles are crucial to the ELLIS mission. Fellows and Scholars supervise ELLIS PhD students, help establish ELLIS units and institutes, and play a pivotal part in launching and developing ELLIS Programs. Their collective expertise drives the network’s efforts to address some of the most pressing challenges in AI.
Joining the ELLIS Network
ELLIS periodically issues calls for new Fellows and Scholars, with announcements published on the ELLIS website, social media channels, and newsletters. Nominations are submitted by Directors of ELLIS Programs and Sites, followed by an evaluation process conducted by the Fellows Committee. Selection is based on scientific excellence and a commitment to advancing AI research.
Scientists can also participate in the network as ELLIS members, contributing to its collaborative ecosystem.
