BÆRUM — DNV, a leading ship classification society, has granted design verification for the groundbreaking “HiNAS Control” navigation system developed by Avikus and Hyundai. Combining artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR), the HiNAS Control system integrates data from various navigation tools to enable ships to autonomously navigate while avoiding collisions and maintaining optimal routes and speeds. This cutting-edge technology aims to enhance safety, reduce fatigue among navigators, improve fuel efficiency, and mitigate maritime accidents and emissions, according to a press release published on EuropaWire .

Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO of DNV Maritime, emphasized the significance of safety in maritime operations and applauded the collaboration with Avikus and Hyundai. He stated, “Safety is at the core of what a Ship Classification society shall support the maritime industry, and we are happy to have contributed with our competence and expertise to complete this design assessment of HD Hyundai’s and Avikus’ system.”

Alfonso Castillero, CEO of the Liberian International Ship and Corporate Registry (LISCR), expressed pride in their role in advancing the design verification process for HiNAS Control. He stated, “We know HiNAS Control will play a significant role in the safety, efficiency and the future of the global shipping industry.”

DNV’s evaluation of the HiNAS Control system was based on its class guideline for autonomous ships (DNV-CG-0264), which involved rigorous risk assessments and adherence to relevant standards. The approval signifies a milestone in maritime innovation, paving the way for the adoption of advanced technologies to improve safety and environmental performance in the shipping industry.
