BILBAO — Avangrid, a subsidiary of Iberdrola, unveils its latest endeavor to bolster grid reliability and customer satisfaction through cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems. The newly established Data Science and Analytics team is set to pioneer innovative solutions aimed at optimizing grid performance and preemptively addressing maintenance needs, according to a press release published on EuropaWire.
Comprised of seven skilled professionals hailing from diverse industries such as healthcare, astrophysics, and finance, Avangrid’s Data Science and Analytics team is tasked with developing three distinct AI systems: Predictive Health Analytics, GeoMesh, and HealthAI. These systems will harness existing grid data to forecast performance, assess equipment conditions, and pinpoint areas requiring attention, thereby enhancing service quality for Avangrid’s 2.31 million electricity customers across its subsidiaries.
Traditionally, utilities rely on age-based or malfunction-triggered equipment replacements, leading to reactive maintenance practices. Avangrid’s proactive approach, spearheaded by Predictive Health Analytics, aims to revolutionize this paradigm by leveraging data insights to preemptively identify at-risk equipment and undertake timely replacements, consequently reducing outages and operational costs.
Pedro Azagra, CEO of Avangrid, asserts, “We are redefining the possibilities for utilities through data science and analytics. By harnessing in-house talent and collaborating with global partners within the Iberdrola Group, we are pioneering AI systems that promise continuous improvement, cost reduction, and enhanced operational efficiency.”
As a frontrunner in the North American electricity sector, Iberdrola’s rapid ascent has positioned Avangrid as a key player, managing close to 10,000 MW of installed capacity and serving 10 million people across 24 states. With a robust portfolio of renewable projects exceeding 25,000 MW, Iberdrola is primed for sustained growth, aligning with the nation’s decarbonization objectives.
Avangrid’s commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles is further underscored by its continued inclusion in the FTSE4Good index for the sixth consecutive year, solidifying its dedication to sustainable business practices.
