TORONTO — The European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) have announced an expansion of their collaboration aimed at advancing global AI research and training. The partnership will enhance the ELLIS PhD and Postdoctoral Program for Learning and Intelligent Systems by providing students with opportunities to collaborate with leading AI researchers from both Europe and North America.
Since its launch in 2020, the ELLIS PhD program has brought together over 200 expert advisors in diverse fields, including AI theory, health, robotics, and environmental sciences. The program offers three tracks – Academic, Industry, and Interdisciplinary – allowing students to engage with advisors from multiple institutions and countries. It has garnered a prestigious reputation, attracting over 8,000 applicants with a selective acceptance rate of under 10%.
CIFAR’s involvement marks the first time a non-European organization has joined the program’s pool of advisors. CIFAR Fellows and Canada AI Chairs will now collaborate with ELLIS advisors, allowing students to gain mentorship and research experience from top AI experts across both continents.

Bernhard Schölkopf, President of ELLIS, highlighted the significance of the partnership, saying:
“World-class science is crucial for the development of AI, and attracting top talent is key to this. This collaboration will further strengthen our ability to bring exceptional young scientists into the field and drive forward AI research and innovation.”
The expanded collaboration between ELLIS and CIFAR represents a major step toward creating a global AI research ecosystem, providing students with the resources and mentorship needed to become leaders in the field.
