MENLO PARK — Meta has recently introduced Meta Movie Gen, a powerful suite of AI models that allow users to create custom videos and sounds using simple text inputs. This tool also enables users to edit existing videos and transform personal images into unique videos. Movie Gen models produce high-quality 1080p HD videos with matching audio tracks. As part of its development process, Meta is working closely with filmmakers and creators to gather feedback and refine the tool, collaborating with industry experts before its public release in 2025.
In a pilot program, Meta partnered with Blumhouse, the acclaimed production company known for its impact in the horror genre. Filmmakers Aneesh Chaganty (Searching, Run), The Spurlock Sisters (participants in Blumhouse’s Screamwriting Fellowship), and Casey Affleck (I’m Still Here, Light of My Life) were invited to test the technology and provide feedback. They worked with Meta’s generative AI researchers, experimenting with the tools to incorporate AI-generated video clips into larger creative projects. Some of their work, such as Chaganty’s short film and experimental videos by creators like artist Paige Piskin and photographer Eric Rubens, is available on Meta’s Movie Gen page, with more content from Affleck and The Spurlock Sisters to follow.
“Artists are the heart of the entertainment industry, and we’re always exploring innovations that help them tell their stories more effectively,” says Jason Blum, founder and CEO of Blumhouse. “Our filmmakers had the chance to test this cutting-edge technology and provide valuable feedback on its strengths and areas for improvement while it’s still in development. These tools will be a powerful asset for directors, and engaging the creative community early is essential to making sure they meet the industry’s needs.”
Feedback from the filmmakers has been insightful, with many noting how Meta Movie Gen sped up their creative process by helping them quickly explore visual styles, tones, and moods. Filmmakers also found Movie Gen’s unexpected responses to text prompts an inspiring element for generating new ideas. The tool’s audio features further allowed them to experiment with background music and sound effects, enhancing their overall creative process.
Meta is extending the pilot into 2025 to continue gathering feedback from both filmmakers and digital-first creators. This will enable the team to refine the models and user interfaces before the tool’s public launch. Meta hopes that, by offering these new tools, Movie Gen will help more people unlock their creative potential and share their unique stories with the world.
