PARIS — At the forefront of cutting-edge technological innovation, the exascale supercomputer JUPITER has made waves by clinching the top spot in the Green500 list, signaling a significant leap forward in energy-efficient computing. Announced at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC) in Hamburg, this achievement was celebrated jointly by Forschungszentrum Jülich, EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, and the ParTec-Eviden supercomputer consortium. The JUPITER Exascale Development Instrument (JEDI), the first module of the groundbreaking supercomputer, has demonstrated remarkable prowess in energy efficiency, boasting an impressive capability of 72 billion floating-point operations per second per watt.

In an era marked by rapid digitalization and escalating demands for computing power, energy efficiency has emerged as a critical imperative. With data centers accounting for a significant portion of electricity consumption, efficient computing has become increasingly paramount. Against this backdrop, the JUPITER supercomputer, procured under the European supercomputing initiative EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, stands out as a beacon of sustainability and innovation. The JEDI module, installed in April, heralds a new era in energy-efficient computing, leveraging the latest advancements in GPU technology and innovative cooling systems to achieve unparalleled efficiency.

Central to JEDI’s remarkable efficiency is its utilization of graphics processing units (GPUs), enabling optimization of scientific applications for calculations with unparalleled energy efficiency. This pioneering approach underscores the transformative potential of GPU-based computing in driving sustainable technological progress. Bolstering JEDI’s capabilities is the integration of NVIDIA’s GH200 Grace Hopper Superchip, representing the pinnacle of GPU innovation and performance.

The JUPITER supercomputer, set to surpass the exaflop threshold, promises to redefine the boundaries of scientific simulation and AI training. Employing a dynamic modular system architecture (dMSA), developed in collaboration with ParTec and the Jülich Supercomputing Centre, JUPITER exemplifies the convergence of cutting-edge hardware and software solutions. With plans for staged installation in the second half of the year, JUPITER is poised to catalyze groundbreaking advancements across diverse scientific domains.

Emmanuel Le Roux, Group SVP, Global Head of HPC, AI & Quantum at Eviden, Atos Group, lauded the milestone achievement, highlighting the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. The integration of warm water-cooling technology, Direct Liquid Cooling, underscores Eviden‘s dedication to enhancing energy efficiency while repurposing waste heat, exemplifying a holistic approach to sustainable computing.

As JUPITER continues its journey towards operational readiness, scientists and researchers eagerly anticipate the transformative potential of this groundbreaking supercomputer. With its unparalleled computing power and unwavering commitment to energy efficiency, JUPITER is poised to redefine the landscape of scientific discovery and technological innovation on a global scale.
