STOCKHOLM — Ericsson, Amazon Web Services (AWS), and Hitachi have joined forces to demonstrate the transformative potential of 5G, artificial intelligence (AI), and automation in revolutionizing manufacturing processes. Leveraging already available technology solutions, the collaboration aims to enhance productivity, efficiency, environmental sustainability, and safety while reducing operational costs, according to a press release published on EuropaWire .
At Hitachi Astemo Americas’ electric motor vehicle manufacturing plant in Berea, Kentucky, USA, Ericsson’s Private 5G infrastructure, in tandem with AWS’s Snow Family, facilitated a groundbreaking trial showcasing the power of private cellular networks in enabling machine learning (ML) models within the manufacturing complex. Real-time video feeds of component assembly operations were transmitted across the Ericsson private 5G network, facilitating early defect detection and thereby minimizing material wastage and production losses.
Thomas Noren, Head of PCN Commercial and Operations at Ericsson, emphasizes the immediate applicability of these solutions, stating, “These solutions can be deployed today in manufacturing and enterprise environments to deliver a range of early adopter competitive advantages.”
Sudhanshu Gaur, Vice President of R&D for Hitachi America and Chief Architect at Hitachi Astemo Americas, highlights the potential of private 5G, cloud, and AI technologies to revolutionize manufacturing processes, paving the way for smarter factories.
Key outcomes of the deployment include rapid use case implementation, higher performance and reliability for quality inspections, and the enablement of global scalability with 5G and cloud technologies. Chris McKenna, Global Lead, Private Wireless at AWS, underscores the significance of securely processing data to drive manufacturing outcomes, affirming the reliability and security of the Ericsson Private 5G Network product.
In a recent webinar hosted by Ericsson, the full deployment was explored, emphasizing the reliability and flexibility of private 5G networks in manufacturing use cases involving AI and machine learning automation models.
